i-Wear - Design Modifications

# One
Physiological Detection
Lo-Fi Feedbacks
01
Is it comfortable ?
Can the clothing be washed ?
Elderly's level of technology acceptance?
01
i-Wear
02
Can it be replaced by some easier gadgets ?
Why not use paper for the elderly to draw ?
03
Smart Table
The system might be too expensive.

Central Panel
Wording problems.
Some common diseases such as diabetes should be default options in the setting of care-receiver information.
04
Initiative of system
Can the system actively provide ways to deal with the situation,
instead of only informing the caregiver ?
05
New Functions :
The clothes can predict the time for defecation.
Sensor layer combine with the ordinary materials , so it can be easily
washed and fold like ordinary clothes. Only the central device has to be
temporally removed.
Reasons :
Defection Prediction makes it easier for the caregivers to prepare and
reduce the costly consumption on diapers.
Using materials that can be washed and feel just like ordinary clothes.
Easier for the caregiver to change the clothes and lower the resistance
of the elderly.

Safety Detection - Posture change detection
02
# Two
New Functions :
In addition to our original design to keep track of patient's location and
safety, we can now also detect when the elderly maintains same posture for too long and inform the caregiver.
Reasons :
Elderly often face a problem of
activity decline. They might stay in the same posture for a very long
period until someone makes them move.
Our gadget can detect and inform caregiver of elderly falling but unable of prevention, it's beyond our design purpose.
01
Broadcast - Physical records and suggestions
03
# Three
New Functions :

Bi-weekly report
Reasons :
To provide records of physical data change in a period of time,
reminders of unusual physical condition, and suggestions of caring according to all data monitored.

Interaction
04
# Four
New Functions :
Provide acoustic cues triggering
elderly to make movements and
activate their limbs. Apart from
motivating physical activity,
music is also used to soothe the
elderly's emotion (Display controlled through central panel).
Reasons :
We want to retain interactive elements in our design.
Facilitate physical extensions and activities of elderly.
Also, we know from user research that music and acoustic stimulation
are often used to either soothe them down or grab their attention.
Can be customized and controlled on central panel.
For example, we can set up : when the elderly raises his hand above 45 degrees, there will be sound effects to entertain him in order to motivate the increase of exercise. Or, when the elderly feel unpleasant, caregivers can also display favored music to calm the elderly down.

Smart Table - Deleted
Reasons for deletion:
Smart table can only provide usage for certain patients. Patients of the early stage refused to use, patients of the post stage don't know to use, and we don't know patients of the middle stage would want to use. It's not very productive for this design only facing patients of middle stage.
Smart table requires elderly to proactively interact with it. But it might not be realistic.
The core value of the smart table was to stimulate interactive activities, we learned from the participating caregivers that they preferred physical toys or doing simple exercises for interactive activities.

i-Wear: Monitor
-
Monitor blood pressure, heartbeat, body temperature, blood sugar and conditions of the gastrointestinal motility for defecation time prediction.
-
Monitor Emotion: the color of a heart image on the i-Wear displays the emotion status of the elderly
-
Monitor Location
-
Same posture for too long
-
Provide acoustic interactions triggering elderly to make movements and activate their limbs.
Smart table: Interactive tasks (drawing, games)
-
Customized content and difficulty
-
Evaluation of intelligence and limb flexibility will be recorded on central panel.
-
Check the elderly’s physical & emotional state, location, and safety from i-Wear and i-Guard.
-
The system will actively send abnormal notifications to caregivers when things go wrong.
-
Control music displays to soothe the elderly's emotion, and sound effects to motivate physical activity.
-
Provide reminders and suggestions of caring according to performance change in physical activity. (Through biweekly report)
-
Provide physical data change in a period of time. (Through biweekly report)
Central Panel: Manage & Reminder
Function
We remove smart table and fulfill interactive triggering function through the interactive music settings on our central panel and i-Wear instead.
i-Guard: Safety Control
-
Caregivers install i-Guard in those dangerous areas, such as door and gas knob.
-
Whenever the elderly approaches these area, i-Guard detects i-Wear and automatically locks the dangerous item in the area to prevent danger
